Spiritual Breakfast

After leaving a Christian workplace that I had been in for the past 4 years, I had a great fear of drifting from God. You have to realize that at my old job, prayer was a part of every group meal and every single meeting. If you called in sick an email went out to the staff asking for prayer and it wasn't uncommon to see co-workers reading their Bible on lunch break.

I was soaking in God's word a lot of the time and it helped me grow in so many ways but I was content with "letting God's word find me" for a long time.

So I made a promise to work harder to put God's word in my life everyday...but how?

For the longest time I couldn't really understand the importance of reading our Bible every morning. It made sense that it was something a good Christian should do but it didn't click for me.

I told myself I would read the Bible later that night when I got home, which I never made time to do.
I told myself that I would carry my Bible around in my purse and surely have plenty of time to read it, which I never did.

I convinced myself that the Bible was hard to understand sometimes and so I settled for reading quick devotionals and short stories. They are not the same but still pretty good.

As an active promise to not drift from God, I began to read my Bible every morning and downloaded an app on my phone that sends me a scripture every morning. Laugh all you want but to start a daily habit (that sticks), you have to start small.

Some days I would only read a few lines and other days I would read a few pages but let me tell you this...it HAS made a difference in my life. There is something unique about God's word that isn't like reading a short story or a devotional. God's words can literally speak to your soul. The words can come alive off of the page and make you believe that God wanted you to read those words, on this day and feel this way when you read them. Now THAT is some serious nourishment!

This is not a guilt trip for you if you aren't reading your Bible every morning...I was there for a long long time. The purpose here is to intrigue you...make you wonder what is waiting for you in the pages of the Bible...messages from God that are just waiting to be found.

Start small. Download an app on your phone that sends you a verse everyday and go from there. I guarantee you that it will be 100% worth it.

Isaiah 55:11 "So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it."
